As I was walking through the riverside trails today, I heard the call of a bird that I don’t think I’ve heard (or at least paid attention to) before. I quickly scanned the area for any movement. Shortly after starting my search, I saw this little guy twisting back and forth with every other call he made. A quick look through my book helped me successfully identify this northern adult, male Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus). According to my book, there is also a Mexican version that appears to have some additional dark patterning around its supercilium (the area just above the eyes) and toward the rear end of the flank (the feathers down the bird’s side).
